Walking is good for our bodies...
... and also helps us to strengthen our memory.
A study by Professor Kirk I. Erickson of the University of Pittsburgh of about 300 seniors assures us that walking long distances helps reduce brain atrophy in patients with Alzheimer's disease in its early stages.
The hippocampus region of the brain tends to shrink slightly with age, but thanks to regular exercise cerebral gray matter tends to shrink less.
Research conducted between 1998 and 2008 confirmed in 2004 that patients who walked around 10km a week had better cognitive abilities and reduced chances of developing Alzheimer's disease by up to 50%.
We suggest a few tips to start walking long distances:
- Stretch the spine sideways and backwards with the head aligned with your spine.
- When walking, swing your arms in order to keep the pace of the movement.
- Supports the heel first and then the rest of the foot to make contact with the ground.
- Always carry a bottle of water to hydrate.
- Use safe and comfortable shoes to avoid slipping.
Alzheimer's currently affects 26 million people so a preventive cure as walking can help us in the future to avoid this evil.
